GreenSea blogger Christina sat down with Ben of Fox Hollow Flora to talk about the current state of Oregon cannabis and Fox Hollow’s success at the 2015 and 2016 GanjaCon.
Q. First, tell us a little about Fox Hollow Flora
A. Fox Hollow Flora is a premium cannabis company born in the south hills of Eugene, Oregon. We have been providing high quality flowers to medical dispensaries in and around Eugene since 2013. Our mainstay dispensary is Amazon Organics in south Eugene. It is important we keep the neighborhood economy close. We are currently building a state of the art facility south of Eugene and are moving into the OLCC system. We look forward to the changing national perspective of cannabis and getting our products legally across state lines in order to share our quality with the rest of the country. They deserve Oregon cannabis too.
Q. In 2015 you won first place for Best Indoor at GanjaCon with your Forum Cut – Girl Scout Cookies. This year you won two awards at GanjaCon with the strain Candyland, first place in People’s Choice and third place for Best Indoor. How does it feel to have your hard work recognized?
A. Obviously, it was a humbling shock to win the first place Ganja Cup trophy for Best Indoor. In 2014 I left my job as Executive Chef of King Estate Winery to focus full-time on Fox Hollow Flora. I set the bar high for myself in order to keep myself challenged like I was as a chef. I joked with my mom that my next goal was to win a cannabis cup. Then a few months later we won the Best Indoor in Eugene award. We admire so many of the cannabis producers in our area so winning that award was again humbling.
We came in 3rd place for Best Indoor at the Portland Ganja Con. We were pleased with that award. Then a couple weeks later we got word that we came in First Place for People’s Choice. Just like Eugene we were surrounded by producers in Portland that we admire, and met some great people at that event. We even forged a few relationships, which is an award in itself. Our positive and generous customer service I’m sure had an impact on us winning the People’s Choice honor.
Q. Are you planning on entering a strain in the upcoming GanjaCon?
A. We just got word that GanjaCon Eugene is on the calendar. We are sorting through future inventory now to determine what we want to enter. We are hoping to enter a Starfighter 4 into the Greenhouse category. We might drop Candyland into the Indoor category, maybe a Bruce Banner 3 as well.
Q. Any advice you’d like to pass on to others in the industry right now?
A. This industry is whatever you want it to be. If you want to go big or stay small there is a place for you in this industry. Oregon has the best cannabis in the world, always remember that and do good by Oregon. Also, give back when you can. Show your family love, show your community love.
Q. Do you have any favorite nutrient brands at the moment?
A. It is no secret that we are in the Nectarfam. That means we made our way with Nectar for the Gods made by Oregon’s Only in Springfield. We have a very positive relationship with Oregon’s Only and Oregon’s Constant Gardener. We would not be here without their generosity and quality products. We are now on a program where we buy bulk and are able to reuse all our plastic containers. This has made us happy as sustainability is important for longevity. We are also fans of Dragonfly Earth Medicine which we use in our soils and our compost tea programs. We make and employ our own Fermented Plant Extracts as well, which we will be developing further as we expand.
Q. You have a grower’s guild in Eugene, how long have you been hosting this? Where did the idea come from and where can we find out more information about this?
A. Fox Hollow Flora has been a member business of the Emerald Trade Alliance (ETA) since January 2015. The ETA has allowed me to facilitate meetings specific to growers. We call ourselves the Grower’s Caucus. We meet 4 times during the year to discuss the status of our industry, our own sustainability, negotiating rules, soil science, and other critical issues that producers need to consider. Come to an ETA meeting to learn more about how to get involved in the Grower’s Caucus.
